Living As Our Creator | Genesis 1

Hello, this morning we are in Chapter 1 of Genesis. You might already be familiar with it, even if you don’t read your Bible regularly. It’s the chapter about creation. You know, when God created the Earth, man, and animals.

When we spend time in the Bible and with our heavenly Father, we can look for God to reveal new things about himself which are also invitations that we can accept to be more like him.

Ephesians 5:1-2 says that we should be imitators of God, as beloved children and walk in love, just as Christ loved you and gave himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God, as fragrant aroma.

As I was reading through Genesis 1, some unexpected things stood out to me. Mostly words that were repeated throughout the chapter. So, this post won’t be line by line but rather focused on the sum of those words that stood out.

Sometimes we don’t share enough scripture between friends, so let’s begin by reading the full chapter of Genesis 1.

For whatever reason, it’s a bit of a tongue twister for me, so please extend a little grace
while you listen. ;) If you’d like to follow along, I’m using an NIV translation.

-
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Gleanings:

Sometimes, I like to use a word counter when I study. I did mention it recently in another post, but it’s not something that I usually rely on. When several stuck out to me, I was curious about any others that I may have missed.  So, I used it in this post. While I know you’ve probably heard several words repeated here, let’s take a look at some of them now. Those are the keys that I will be pointing to in this message.

The first is ‘Created.' It’s used five times. The word ‘Made’ appears another 5 times [KJV has it 8x]. In verse 27 he says that we are made in His image. Well, remember that verse I just shared in the beginning from Ephesians about being an imitator of Christ-  well, that got me wondering if we too are meant to ‘create.'

1 Timothy 2:2 says that we should lead Godly lives. There are countless other verses that show us that the things in our life are created to glorify Him. Wouldn’t that consist of doing and being the same as he?  Yet how many times have I heard someone say, I am not talented or creative? How many times have I said those things myself?

I recognize that for some of you listening, it would take a real act of faith to believe that you could create something that might glorify God but isn’t that gap where God does his best work? –When God asks you to believe that he can use your offerings- when you don’t see the way or the means or even direction.

Our God carefully and thoughtfully created each of us with plans and purpose. –And if it there is something that has been brewing in your heart, he might have designed you to do something with it. Please, friend, take the pressure off of yourself and just prayerfully explore it.

The next word I see is the word ‘Saw.' It appears 7 times. In this case, He looked at the things that he made after he made them. Do you and I study the things that we’ve made? Do we let them minister to us while we’re making them or once they are complete?  On the other hand, as humans, maybe we need to first see them in our mind to create them. –To envision them or use our imaginations.

But over and over again every time he ‘saw’ or looked at something, you know what he did? He said it was ‘Good.' That’s our next word. It appears 7x. He saw the light, and it was good. He saw the seas, and it was good. He continues through the passage.

Yet you and I when we create, we’re quick to note the things that we could do better or differently. We judge them usually in a negative fashion or compare them to someone else. He does none of this. I know—He’s God. Why would he?

For every single thing he makes, he says it is good. Then when he gets to man, he says -----‘whoops—do over’.

Just kidding.

He says that we’re good too!

YOU are good!

Good.

Now, I don’t know if this disclaimer will be helpful or confusing but, when I say that we’re good, I am not talking about who we are as sinners.

We are all sinners. Christ died on a cross for every one of us, but he also died to give us a new life.

1 Timothy 1:15-17 is a great passage (and paraphrased here) it says to me, Christ came to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. BUT because I am the worst and because God shows me mercy- and uses something in my life even when I am still a Hot mess, others are able to believe and have hope in him as well and receive their own eternal life.

He died to use or weakness, to reveal his glory.

Yet how many times, do we tell God, who we are not, why we cannot, instead of living by the Life of a God who is and who is shown time and again using people who create and step out of their comfort zone and use things within their means.

Because you are made in his image, chosen, forgiven, accepted by God, you have power. His power.

John 16:15 says: All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

John 17:10 - All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.

You can’t be full of power available to God, made in his very image, chosen and purposed, and yet still be too broken to make a difference. YOU ARE GOOD!

And I know, this might be too- “self helpy” or too “hippy” because it’s about creating. Some of you are flinching because you think creative only means crafty. Hang in there.

Hear my heart. He does not say we’re perfect or flawless. He says that you (we) are good!

So, the sum of things that you make out of your life, they don’t have to keep you up at night to be perfect either. It’s like we tell our kids; if it was your best, and in the right heart for God, your ‘good enough’ still glorifies our heavenly Father. That might to you feel like a failure because it’s not blue ribbon worthy in your eyes, but it’s good enough for Him.

We’re talking about a God who let Moses part seas with a stick. I don’t think that his standards are too lofty. They might be too lofty for us to attain as it says in Psalms 139.  But that’s is a matter of what we can understand.  –Not who or what he expects us to be.

Moving right along.

Remember that crafty bit? Well, creation isn’t only using a paint brush and canvas. Creation is in your work and how you plan your meetings. It’s in your parenting and how you choose to discipline your kids. True yes, it can be in how you express yourself, your hobbies, your interests but it’s also in the methods that you choose to connect with people, even when—especially when- you have to overcome an obstacle to meet them.

But the next thing that I see is the word ‘Said’ – 11 times it appears. Creation is in your words. It’s how you encourage others. God spoke light, he spoke the sun and moon and stars. Some of the brightest things that you and I will ever create will be things that are made from our words. Even if it’s only what you say to yourself that no one hears-- or what you pray for.

Who do you speak to?

What and whom do you have authority over?

What do you give your power to when you do speak? Are your words about the problem, or the possible solutions? Are they about your worry or your hope? Are they about what you cannot or what God can

--or are your words even about what God might be able to do through and in you?

What about what he doesn’t say?

This is the first chapter, right? I get it’s the history of the beginning, but it’s also like the baseline. I mean, it sets the tone for the whole Bible. Not once in the first chapter when God is making the entire universe, do you see the words labor, sweat, work…

Give me some more words that aren’t listed – please. It peaks my interest. (Yes, I know that there is an entire dictionary that's missing from chapter 1.)

In fact, the word we see instead caught me by surprise because it appears 13 times. More than any of the other words we discussed. It’s the word ‘Let.' He said let there be light, let there be water, let there be grass.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with hard work or planning or trying to make things the best you can. Certainly, we should do our best to glorify God. –But I have been a perfectionist and it sometimes still seeps out. When it does, it robs me of the joy that surrounds me. –I mean does anyone remember Martha? Jesus was at her table, and she couldn’t put the vacuum down.

I am kidding again. Don’t look that up. There are no vacuums in the Bible.

You can read about her in Luke 10. But some of you are the same way. Jesus, the Holy Spirit, GOD is in your midst –and you can’t understand why you don’t see him. Why He doesn’t speak to you. Why you don’t feel his presence. It’s because you haven’t left your work. Even when you’re sitting in a pew.

You’re relying on the things that you can create perfectly, instead of trusting a perfect God to use what you created.

But HE LET- these things happen.

Just stop and Imagine with me all the things your life could be, the person you could be, the things that you could make and the ways that you could glorify God if only you would let it…

Maybe even let it go.
Or Let yourself go.

Now backing up for a minute. I am really trying to write/speak more about Scripture and challenge myself to go deeper than just ‘what about me”.

I recently shared a post on some tips to help you study your Bible. Then this week, I opened a box of books that were given to me by a friend last year. In it just so happened to be (in a Godly coincidental kind of way) a book on Genesis. It is called, “My Creator, My Friend” by Bruce Larson

On pg. 13, the author gives two more points that I’d like to add to that but to also challenge myself to use here and in the future as well.

The first is:

1. When you study your Bible, what does this chapter say about God? (And how does it say it?)

2. The second tip given was Instead of looking for hidden messages, what does the text say when you take it at its word? So, let me try to answer both of those things here.

So, what do I see about God, simply from the text?

·       First verse – God IS…. and has been from the beginning

·       Verse 2 says he is hovering above waters. Later in the Bible, you will see other verses, like Zephaniah 3:17 that says He is in our midst. The end of this chapter does not lead to the end of God, he is still here.

·       As for God, he is a creator. He is shown over and over making things from what was not there before.

·       He is a part of the Trinity. (v26)

·       He calls things to be. The he restates it. Go back and read each thing that he spoke into existence, then a few lines later you will see, “and it was so” or a summary of what was just created.

·       Next, he is a God of law and order. One or two things were created at a time. He didn’t make it all at once or even on the same day. He was putting things in their place., separating water from the sky. Even designating power to some of those things. The sun and moon were to govern the day and night. Men were made to rule over the fish in the sea…

·       In that same vein, He is a God of purpose – The trees and plants were created to produce seeds. The birds and fish were to multiply. Even the land was called to produce something. When we circle back to our purpose, man’s purposeLook at verse 28 – God blessed man and woman and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.

Subdue doesn’t mean to force submission. It means to make things calm.

So, with your purpose and circling back to the point of my message, imitating Christ as a creator; When you create, how can you bring law, order, yet calmness to your realm. -In your work place, in your home, at your church, in your neighborhood?

Colossians 3:15 says:  Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Philippians 4:7 says that it’s the peace of God that transcends all understanding.

Matthew 5:9 says Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Friend to friend: I don’t know what this speaks to you, but I hope that it speaks the same light to you as it did to me. But I had to go through this on my own and learn it before I even saw it here. So, let me wrap this up with a few tips from what I’ve learned. If you’re not looking to have the power to use, or looking for a way to use God’s power in your life, there’s a void. Create an opening and let it in. If you don’t have a hobby, get one. Find things to learn about. I had a lot of things that I was interested in but when all this changed for me, it started by painting rocks that I found at the river with my kids. You don’t have to use rocks. It’s what I had available. Don’t buy anything if you’re not able, find some things in your house and google it. –or message me, maybe we’ll have an adult creative experience. Haha (I don’t know what that means).

1.     Curiosity seems to feed your creative energy. You can be curious about being a gardener, and it can feed your thoughts in another area of your life, unrelated to gardening.
2.     Whatever you attempt the first time, heck even if it’s a big deal like a presentation or a speaking event that you have never done. Don’t go in, making it perfect.  Go in, making a list of what you’ll learn from it so that you can do it even better next time.
3.     If you can tie it to scripture and meditate on it while you’re doing it, it will speak to you, but it will also help you memorize it.  –That’s part of why all those verse coloring pages and Bible journals are such a hit.
4.     More than that, though, having a hobby, all your own, will give you a sense of accomplishment and your own little private thing to enjoy. But it’s also a form of meditation. It’s relaxing. Because the thing requires such focus, it helps you stop giving attention to all the other chatter running behind the scenes that is stressing you out.
5.     Finally, don’t stop there. When you get too comfortable or bored, look for another hobby or take it up a notch. Do the same in your spiritual life.

So, with that, I challenge you to go into the day being willing to put your ideas to work. "Let us challenge ourselves." Be willing to try new things, reinvent, even if it's only ourselves. In the end, no matter the results, acknowledge the effort and what was produced. –How’s that for another look at holy living?

I would LOVE for you to read Genesis 1 on your own and share your findings with me as well. (Links, emails, comments – all of it! –Even if it’s a week or month later or if your points are extremely different than mine.) J

 4 Kids

 * * *

All of this started because I wanted to have a lesson with our neighborhood kids. Using this message and doing an art project. I had to cancel my event because of weather, but I know it will happen soon, so these are my notes.

1.     What are the things that you can see about God here?

a.     Well, he’s a creator. What else?

2.     What are some of the things he created?
3.     How did he create them?
a.     He spoke many of them.
b.     Some of the brightest things that you create will be the things that you speak into your life and others as well.
4.     Can you name something that you heard about us in this passage?
a.     We’re created in his image too. – v26
b.     What else –we’re good?
c.     See commentary on 1:25

5.     In fact, it looks like every time he made something –he stood back, checked it out and decided that it was good.
a.     Admire your work [take picture]
b.     Tell me things 3 things that are good about it. [Write them down]
c.     He doesn’t say look at your best friends work or write what you wish was different.
d.     He doesn’t tell you everything that’s wrong with it either.
6.     Did you learn anything from what you made today?

A little I.O.U. to the BIG guy!

I've got a testimony that I've been sitting on and I just need to come clean with it! Oddly enough, it's not a bad one. It's a great one! I've just been worried that it will come across like I am trying to boast about myself instead of glorifying God. But I don't only want to talk about how I see God help me in the storm. I want to talk about those radical ah-has that got my attention!

In 2012 I shared my first testimony. In 2013 I changed my life to focus only on family and God. I also started writing as a bi-product of that. On a June day, I posted a prayer. I felt strange as I did it but I had made a challenge for myself with God that I would accept every opportunity to pray out loud for a year in hopes to overcome my fear of doing it. I felt like this post was just another variation of that challenge. So, I accepted. One of the many lines of that prayer included "show me one new thing that I miss in my every other day".

It took me two weeks to write about it but THAT VERY SAME DAY the motor in my 4Runner blew. It might not sound like such a great God testimony at first but hang in there.

ALL of the events of that day really spoke to me. I had such a feeling of his nearness. True joy & true peace. A calmness, unlike me, that just covered me. Everyone that was involved seem to have the same phrase "never seen that before" which just made me tune in that much more to my earlier prayer and what he might be doing. Little things also made me see how he provided during the storm.

As it turns out replacing/repairing the motor in that year 4Runner is double-triple what I anticipated it to be. We weren't in a position to buy a car or even fix this one. From the moment it broke, I knew that God was going to have to be involved in the solution. But he met my need along the way at every junction.

It actually took a few months for us to decide what to do. So August comes along. We still don't have any money. A relative offers to help but really can't do more than what the motor costs and the 4Runner needed more work before this issue. We're not sure which direction to go. We look for cars that might match that allowance but sadly, even though it's a lot of money to me, we couldn't seem to find a vehicle that matched what we had to give.

I once heard Joyce Meyer talk about a bracelet that she gave away. It was a foreign concept to me that God might want me to give up a "thing" that belong to me in order to make someone else happy [or even to give him glory]. I mean sure it's easy to give up old clothes and broken dishes especially when someone else needs them. But why would he want me to give up something I liked; something I loved and was even given or blessed with? I mean I did "earn" it, right? Funny how we think that...

But something else that she said resonated with me even more. She said that God told her "Once I tell you to give something away, it no longer belongs to you, and if you keep it after that, it will never give you joy"

I never considered myself to be a "things" kind of person. However, some memories of my childhood were harder than others. We moved a lot and so we never kept anything. We didn’t have much money and so what we did have was usually second hand if we didn’t go without. -Not that there is any shame in that but because of that, a pair of diamond earrings that I had made me feel special.

Not only that they were sentimental. I know that I received them as a blessing from God but I also received them from a person that I deeply love.

Then one day on my knees in prayer over this situation, I was considering things that I might have to sell. These earrings suddenly came to mind. It will sound ridiculous but I sat in my closet and sobbed. Not over having to get rid of things but it almost felt more like a sob of repentance for storing some kind of worth [maybe even my own] or value in things. The moment was brief and when it was over, I just knew that they had to go.

I tried to sell them but even with the rising cost of gold, I couldn't even get a third of what they were worth. Because they were special; what I was offered monetarily just wasn't enough to justify my getting rid of them even if it was just a contribution toward my issue.

But Malachi 3:10 just kept circling.

So again, in prayer I asked God what he was trying to get me to see. I just kept feeling like I needed to give them up for God. I remembered that story from Joyce. I thought about holding onto them and then possibly losing them later. Then I would be without the obedience and possibly still without the earrings. I can't explain the urgency that I felt but I needed to be free of them at once. Maybe because I simply didn't trust myself to not try to dictate who he wanted to have them.

So, I wrote two letters. One to my preacher and one to the "recipient" [if my preacher felt like it was appropriate]. The letter to my preacher contained my explanation and I am going to share one paragraph from it below:

"I am in a real place of need now. Not just monetarily but spiritually and even physically. I want to be in alignment with God more than anything else. I feel like this was just one more stone that needed to be plucked loose. (pun intended) I am thankful that I don’t need “things” to feel special anymore. I am also thankful that much like the two coins, he accepts what we have. The world might not buy what we have to sell but if it’s the only treasure that we have and if we give it to him; he not only accepts it but he can do more with it than the world ever could!"

My letter to the other person contained a testimony about something that I was given and a promise that I felt from God because of it. (Ask me about it sometime and I will share it with you.) I met my preacher on the corner and gave him a box with the two letters.

Meanwhile, family offered to help us find something newer than what we'd been looking for. I cringed but following my husband's lead, I went along. I prayed for God to give me an answer. I didn't want anyone going into debt on our behalf or even paying for that kind of expense. When we came to the first van, we opened the back and tears just started pouring from my eyes. ...It sounds silly, I know.  -But there was the same "nearness" in the tears.

If that wasn't enough when we sat at the table the salesman, JJ, tried to close the deal. I just couldn't commit. When he asked why, I explained about our truck and how family would have to help. We didn't technically have any money to give him right then. Then in one of those "Godly & coincidental" kind of ways the salesman (whom we've never met before) started giving a testimony about how God helped him in a real time of need and he used the generosity of others to bless him. Then he just kept repeating, "If someone wants to bless you, you should let them." I was still crying... just so much more by this point.

I know that someone on the other side of this screen is thinking "Of course he'd say that, he's trying to sell you a car!" But you'd have to have been there. My husband who, if the truth be told, is not really sure how he feels about God and who is also a man that is usually pretty itchy about talking to people. And yet, this same husband was chillin' at the table like he had all day to sit there with a car salesman. Seriously, we were there over an hour just talking about God. Not only that I am crying like a fool and JJ is practically preaching. It was a surreal moment. I mean can you just try to picture this for a second!?!

When JJ asks why I am still crying if someone wants to bless me... Colin just shakes his head and says my wife likes to hear people talking about good things! (And boy do I. Can somebody puh-lease tell me a testimony about blessings!!)

Even so, things were moving so fast. We needed to step back for a moment. I needed to pray and there were some other vans that we wanted to look at. So we stopped at a few dealerships on the way home.

In the next day or two, I got a phone call at work and thought it was a salesman for a van but it turns out that it was our youth pastor. We laughed about how I thought he was trying to sell me something. Then he asked if we were looking. I explained the situation. He asked if I'd like him to post an anonymous ministry need on his Facebook page. It felt a little weird but I said sure. I'd actually had peace since the motor went out and I had peace now too.

The next day when my youth pastor called to tell me that a family had a car that they wanted to donate, I really wasn't surprised but all I could muster up was "wow"... I was literally speechless. I mean what do you say to that other than Thank You God! -And thank you Ed and please, oh please, THANK THAT FAMILY!

This conversation is a little hard for me to figure out how to have with my husband. He doesn't know Ed or this family and this element of faith is a new area for both of us.  ...I know that it's a God thing but how on earth will I be able to convince him that I'd rather have the car. But it's too late. My husband and the relative have already found a van that they wanted to get.

I could have pushed the issue but while I may not always act it, I do feel a tremendous amount of respect for my husband and I do want to also respect his wishes. In this scenario, I feel like God has plainly met a need and revealed himself in it in either outcome. I try to talk to Colin but truthfully, the timing for this discussion is just never right. I blurt it out but can't possibly connect all of the dots in just a few moments. (In fact it has taken me 2 years to get it spelled out here.)

It ends up that we go with the Van. I call Ed and tell him to bless another family with the car and he has a perfect family in mind. (Gosh I wish that I could've been there when Ed told them the news!)

Now before you start trying to rationalize all of this; go back and read the prayer when I discovered my 4Runner was broken. "I want a running vehicle. Heck, a new car is just fine. I boldly ask for it. Why not?" - Did he not give me both! You can credit my family with one but how do you explain the other? Does his word not say "Come Boldy" and to ask for ALL THINGS.

But aside from that, I prayed for some other stuff even BEFORE the truck messed up. Read the last two paragraphs of the original prayer.

"If it's my rules that destroy my visibility, take me back to infancy. When I was so fresh from you, that I was not aware of my own desire. Did I then know, where I came from? Reduce me to tears and no other form of words. To be satisfied with what you give instead of what I want. -When I had no choice but to see what only you set before me. Even then, I am sure that I could not retain all of you but would I be able to see more?

Prepare my heart God so that I can see, then show me at least one new thing that I miss in my every other day. Make this day new. Find me worthy of your secrets. My heart so longs to know more."

I mean "Reduce me to tears" and "Return me to infancy" -what does that even mean???? Don't feel weird. I had no idea either. I thought it was odd when I said it. But I have discovered that it was my heart [or my spirit man] asking to unlearn things that were holding me back in my faith. So that he could teach me what he wanted me to know about him instead.

If you know me at all, you know that I've become a crier. I might have cried at other points in my life. Maybe even all through my life. Truthfully, I can't remember how often. But I can tell you that during the last two years I have been a wet mess. (A good mess but a wet one! And literally choked up "as no other form of words") And as much as I want to explain it, I simply cannot tell you how I know that all of this crying is a God thing but I know that he is working in me with every.single.tear that falls!

When I told my preacher that I wanted my heart to be right with God, to give up superficial special things in order to right me.... Well he answered that too and made me see how insecure that I was. Gosh and I know that sometimes I might even portray the faithful life as only a struggle and maybe even condemn myself too much but I know that I know THAT I KNOW that God is with me now! And he promises to right ALL my paths that aren't straight!!!

And even still, I know that someone else saying, well if this is God and he did this for you why hasn't he done this for me or for anyone else that I know. Let me just tell you how much I have struggled with giving this testimony. For that reason...! In fact I have struggled more over this than giving up the earrings.

I don't know where you are in your life right now. But I once took an Experiencing God study. In this study there is a moment that is referred to as a "Crisis of Belief". In January 2013, I hit mine. I didn’t feel like my life was fitting quite right. I knew that it was finally time to stop going with the flow of life. I needed to pull over so that God could really do some work in me.

I started this strange little blogging/prayer/testimony thing. I actually had no idea what a blog even was or why exactly [at first] that I was writing. But it was my way of listening. I started changing some habits. –Wrestling with a few others! But documenting every piece of it helped me see his hand in my life. And any little thing that I felt like God was telling me to do; I really tried to be sure to do them

I want to say that it's about obedience but it's so much more than that. It's about the desire behind your motives in your relationship with God. Anyone can be obedient. The things that you are doing, are you doing them because you have to or because you want to?

If you take anything away from this at all, do not let it be anything related to the prosperity gospel. If you think that I am telling you that coming into faith suddenly means you get the presents. TRUST me when I tell you, that is not true!! Heck, follow the lives of Joseph, Job, Jeremiah or countless others to confirm that!

In fact if you want to know the truth, I was paying my full tithes and working in the church and my motor still blew and I still could not afford to fix it. Bad & hard things happen to faithful people! BUT God was able to show me something else in that hardship that I had been blind to! He provides what we need in our absences. I assure you that if you're struggling, God will meet you in that struggle.

Confess your issues and the status of your relationship with him. Accept him as your Lord so that you can hear his replies. Believe for once that he might just be able to reveal himself to you and then ask him to help you be obedient. But when he answers BE SURE to GIVE HIM THE GLORY!

Acquiring faith is hard work and some serious dedication. But when I rearranged my life to know him, he met me at every level that I sought him. He continues to do so.

I implore you to do the same! Please Believe!

Go backs
  1. It's not only your obedience but your delight in being obedient.
  2. I see God more during the act of obedience or after than I do before my obedience. When he reveals himself, it makes it easier to trust him again later. So obedience is not just about completing tasks but rather building faith.
  3. Be specific & be bold in prayer!
  4. Do not get stuck on the thing that I gave. If this seems boastful to you, I can totally tell you some areas that God is working with me now where giving for me is hard. Let's talk about it.
  5. It is not about the monetary value of things. Sometimes it's about what the thing represents in your life. Or he might even ask us to give up things that don't make any sense to us because it will mean a whole lot to someone else. You may never get the answer as to why you had to give it but if you were obedient, I guarantee you will see his hand somewhere else, look for it!
  6. The way that I received the earrings surprised me. The van and the car surprised me and I have had other similar situations both great and small where he continues to surprise me. If God does something once, Trust that he can do it again!
  7. 'It' is never yours or ours, we are just stewards. When God blesses you with something, see if you can use it in a way to share a testimony OR bless others with it and also include with a word of encouragement about their relationship with God [giving him glory]? When you have to give it up, will you give him glory once again?
  8. If you're not sure how to have a testimony about it, set a reminder. Try to write down as many of the details as you possibly can because you might forget some of those details later. If you can't complete it, it might not be time. If it keeps coming to your heart, he might have more for you to know. Keep collecting details until it is finished. Then you will know that it's his timing!

The Talent

I heard a story about a friend the other day. It was quick and over the top and just the type of story that I would expect to hear about this person. In fact if you knew the person at all, you'd know that this person is a "grab life by the horns" kind of guy. Fearless.

The story was interrupted before I got all of the details but on my way home I couldn't stop thinking of the bits I knew. In fact when I retreated to my car, to my surprise, I cried simply because it touched me so deeply. I was in awe.

I let out a prayer to God. One of mixed emotions; maybe with shame, relief, confusion and to question- It had been a few years since I've seen or heard from this person and so why is this affecting me so much now...

Fast Forward

I started a new study last week with my Sunday School class called "Created To Be God's Friend" by Henry Blackaby. Day two starts with a sentence "Only one life to live, and it will soon be past, and only what is done with God will last. This can, if one believes this truth, bring to all of life an urgency to live meaningfully and to live well."

I continue on in the chapter and then answer the first question. "How would your family and friends know that you live life with intentional focus and certainty to the point that you do not waste life or live life carelessly?" To which I replied: I'm told that I am sensitive and think too much and/or take things too seriously but also that I make things magical (in a sense). I think that is definitely because of my relationship with God and because I consider "MORE" than just what I see!

Moving on in the chapter the summary asks us to "Write a statement here that God has used most in your life today." And my pen spilled over...

"[Repeating my response to the last question] I guess I feel like God is trying or has been trying for a while now; to help me celebrate and want to cultivate what makes me different. I used to let the devil isolate me with my differences or make me feel like something was wrong with me. [Like over explaining and thinking too much]. But when I start thinking about the good that God could do with my differences; I start looking for those special ways that I can serve. Then I look for how I can do just a teensy bit more to give God GLORY. -To provoke thought, to inspire or to endear.

When I slow down to think about those things- When I remove the distractions in my life so that I am free to take my time- If I put my heart in it- I am really proud of the woman that God thought I could be. What other way can I give Glory to God than by doing my best to be that person?!"

Ooh my heart was stirred and my eyes filled with tears. I thought of my friend again then continued to write. "There was a period in my life where I compared everything because the devil was still using my differences to make me feel like I didn't have it right. So, I tried to hide that part of me away. In hiding myself and in keeping God in a quiet corner, I allowed the devil to twist my longings with things that I felt were worth comparing."

Back up

Back in December I started the study "When Godly People Do Ungodly Things" by Beth Moore. It's a study about the ways that you can become "had" by the Devil. This was also right around the time I started allowing God to really get into the meat of my identity. Around page 40 a class mate said the material made him consider the Parable of the hidden talent and then he read it to us.

You might be familiar with this chapter because it's usually tied to the subject of money or tithes or giving. Yet somehow it became so literal to me. The parable of our hidden talent. I'd never considered hiding things of me [good or bad] as a sin against God, especially when those things were related to insecurity. I came home and started a post but could never find the words to fill it.

Meanwhile (Another side trail)

For a while now I've started letting God pull me back from other activities so that I could spend more time with him. (I know that sounds strange but I will elaborate more on another day.) I also started doing random little things, like writing letters to people that touch me. Stopping to do something (that often seemed silly or pointless) for someone else. Praying with people, even if I didn't know them. I've even started giving some personal things or time away but with a scripture and personal story that tied it all together but for God's name instead of mine.... (That's not to toot my own horn, please keep reading.)

But suddenly-

All at once this morning it came together in my heart. My friend inspired me to be deeper and more meaningful and to want to unearth greatness. His unique contribution in my own life simply reminded me or magnified my own desires for those very same purposes.

Thankfully, God led me to realize [back then] that I was drawing too close to my friend. I confessed to God and even to my friend. Almost immediately my mountain moved and our ties were severed.

In that time since I have seen my him; I have really re-evaluated my life. I've scaled back on a lot of things and I've poured my heart into my own faith, myself and my family. In each one of those moments that I explained where I have given something personal of myself -God has moved me. In such a way that words and testimony just can't explain. I found that same awe inspiring greatness. In me. Not of me. Not because of me but in what the holy spirit does inside my heart and mind that causes me to want to move.

Let me restate: When I allowed God to come into all of the parts of my life, he became able to move me. Every time that he does, I find that thing that I have been longing for. It is almost always by the thing that he asks me to do. And yet, it's only when I do it in a way that only I can do, do I feel that he gets the glory.

One of my favorite quotes is by Theodore Roosevelt. "Comparison is the greatest thief of joy". Joy is a promise and a gift of the holy spirit. It's not based on circumstance or talent. It is a reward of obedience and a satisfaction that comes from being true to God. While comparison on the other hand, keeps us from looking at who and or what we are to obey.

Comparison might have allowed me to draw too close to someone else and potentially away from others. But aren't those desires that we feel that we need to compare, the very same ones that God wants to cultivate inside each of us or our lives? He calls to us in our heart and reaches into the depths of our souls. Wanting to pull out this "talent" we've hidden away. So that HE can make us radiate and shine for his Glory!

If we allow ourselves to watch anyone other than God, it becomes an invitation for the Devil to.... just confuse us.

So why the tears?

Of course I missed my friend and my heart spilled over for what he has been able to accomplish and the places his life has taken him. The latest news made my heart glad to see that he was still as I remember him.

It was also a moment of rejoicing. I mean just looking at where the Lord has taken me and how listening but also guarding my heart truly saves... -No matter what our circumstances are, or what our minds, or even our feelings might lead us to believe otherwise. My life is pretty incredible these days and in that very same token this occurrence just reminded me of how close I could've been had by the devil.

Also, I think the tears were a sign that healing was coming. Once I sat down and really calculated these thoughts, it seemed to finally heal a sensitive place.

Lastly, my friend might actually be afraid of many things but he never let fear stop him. Perhaps that alone is all it really takes to make a difference in someone else's life. -Even your own.

Always guard your heart. For all that you do flows from it. Proverbs 23:7

Greater is he that is IN me than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4

To the reader:

Isn't it longings that send people after money and chasing dreams, leaving spouses and sadly even sometimes leaving this life voluntarily? We seem to spending most of our lives looking for accountability partners, advice, etc. but God is calling, reaching, and waiting to fill those desires and we simply go the other way.

Spend some time this week (and longer) really considering what makes you different. What is it that you wish you could do differently? Then consider what it is that people compliment you on. How are they connected? Ask yourself what it is that you've been longing for?  Are you connecting a longing with a specific person or thing?  Take a moment to ask God if it's really that which you are after or if perhaps it's him.... Ask him to fill it and redirect it instead.

Don't want what someone else has. Want what God wants to give you. Often we already have all of the pieces. Sometimes we just need to rearrange our view.

Beyond words (Job 32:18) ... HE satisfies. (Psalm 63:2-5)

Decide In Your Heart

A friend of mine is a budding photographer. I took the kids to meet her this week. Jaxie will be one in a month and I have an empty frame in the living room begging for his first of many annual pictures.  Knowing from past experience that the older 2 would likely freak out, I told them that they didn't have to participate. They could if they wanted but it wasn't required.

We went to the battlefields. We unloaded the cars and carried things and children out to the field. There were so many pretty textures and natural backdrops. Tina started taking pictures of all of us while we were getting settled. When the focus became Jackson, Ethan took notice and started trying to get his attention instead. Then he started putting in for gum balls that I had forgotten in the truck. It wasn't exactly a quick walk back. So, I tried stalling. Ethan was relentless. Within a short time, I was making the trip back to the truck to get the gumballs anyway.

Only, Ethan wasn't satisfied when I handed them over. Instead of one, he wanted two. Instead of red, he wanted white. Now, with gumballs in hand, he wanted to go explore a building on the property. Of course he couldn't because he's too young to go alone. He's pushing so hard. It catches me by surprise. And yet I've seen this all before. It's become a reoccurring theme between us. I can already see how the day is unfolding. I start getting anxious and I begin pummeling my internal list of questions. Do I put my foot down? Do I have to go so far as to whip him? -Here or there? Do I let the boy go be a boy and explore? Am I a helicopter mother? Is he testing boundaries or am I short changing him somewhere else? Why is this so complicated?

I tried distracting him again by attempting a group shot of me and the kids. I got on the ground so that they could jump all over me. It seemed to be working. It seemed like we were all getting back on track and then out of nowhere Sophie became hysterical. She didn't want to stand. She didn't want to sit. I made her get leaves on her tights. I don't really think that she knew why she was crying but as far as she was concerned, the world was ending. I took her back to the truck to get changed into jeans. Defeat is starting to sink in.

Sophie and I make it back to Tina and the boys. The distraction of the group shot was forgotten. Ethan picks up exactly where he left off before about the building. Can we go now? I am annoyed. I had envisioned in my mind that we'd get pictures and then go off exploring the building, the canons, and anything else. But yes, let's get this out of the way. We go to the building.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I am still trying to get that group shot. I just want ONE picture of 3 kids that look like they're not being tortured. Well really, I love them. I want a thousand pictures of them together looking happy. I don't realize it then but this desire is really driving the rest of the day. For some reason, I just keep trying. Ethan keeps resisting. -On the walls outside of the building, on the fence and in the grass again, I am still trying.

The day finally comes to an explosive head. One that suddenly wakes me up and I realize that this dynamic cannot continue between us. Not today. Not in the future. Later there is a sweet spot. But the tone had already been set. It's playing low in mind. By the time that we got home, I was exhausted. We all were. After dinner we got in my bed and the kids watched a movie. I recounted the day.

I read a bloggers post about how anger was really sadness with a mask. I let the story settle. The next morning I woke up with a heavy heart. I recounted the day, from the moment Ethan asked about the gumballs.

I thought about that article. Was I angry? No. I was anxious. Was there an underlying reason for my anxiety? What on earth was I anxious about? And why does it resurface in the same exact spot, every time. -When I am being tested by him.

Then I think of Philippians 4:6.  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything… let your requests be made known to God.

I realize that I never once reached out to God in that moment of need. This girl, who prayed for and received a 1” toy donkey when there was no time left to find one. This girl, who prayed for and received help with her father, when his own father was on his deathbed. This girl, who has prayed a million other little prayers between those two; never once considered asking God to help her with this thing that seemed to defeat her regularly. How many other moments in my life are Godless? I know that there must be many but how many? I wonder if the day would've been more peaceful had I started off right. I stop and offer repentance and a request for help right then.

Then back to the problem. It's not anger that immobilizes me in that moment. It's anxiety. But why?

I think of the words decide in your heart, which come from 2 Corinthians 9:7. I realize that under all of that anxiety, I am engulfed in a sea of emotions ranging from:
  • Frustration of being tested.
  • Exhaust from its reoccurrence.
  • Guilt because I feel like I never see them and I wonder if they simply need MORE than I am giving.
  • Uncertainty, because they are little. Perhaps, I demand too much.
  • Shame, because sometimes I think I just need to get a grip and be the parent.
  • Sadness, because I just don't know sometimes, if I am doing this right.
  • Even love. Despite the testing, I still love them and sometimes, I just want to go sit on them and hold them down and push their little cheeks up into a smile, and say "Hey we're going to enjoy this moment dangit!"

Who knew parenting was so hard? As I write this, I realize that my anxiety is because I have not decided in my heart which one of these emotions will steal these moments, or the next one when it happens again. Ethan pushes twice as hard because he also, does not know.

I've been thinking that my issue was because I don't follow through often enough. Really, it's that I can't serve 2 masters or however many others that I just outlined. (Mat 6:24). I have not decided in my heart which one of those emotions will lead and so they all compete, keeping me from defining what the rules really are. How could he know if he's crossing the line, if I never decide when or where to lay it down?

I suddenly feel the need to write a mission statement on a post it note, so that I can fold it up and put it in my wallet. The next time this happens, I will freeze time and pull out my note and remind myself what I said was going to happen...  I'm only half serious but I know that I must decide.

I cannot lead effectively if I am hung up on fear or guilt or shame. –And I must still follow rules when I feel those things, so what I teach my children should be no different; particularly when it comes to respect and safety. Nor can I pretend to make things optional with the kids when I clearly have a goal in mind. Like having a silly picture… sigh.

Thinking about the situation in this light, changes the way I feel about it. I now feel as if I have a secret weapon in my pocket. Wisdom and a plan.

And I thank God for the power of prayer.
