Palm Sunday | Children's Church

This is my bulleted list but you should still be able to figure out the direction. Feel free to use it if you'd like to!

Tools needed -
Rubber stamp with palm trees or stickers. The kids LOVED this!

Lesson:

Palm Sunday -
The biblical account of Palm Sunday can be found in Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; and John 12:12-19. I also used this link for some background.

Greetings

Today is Palm Sunday - We celebrate Jesus’s Triumphal entry into Jerusalem as Lord of Lords during the week of his crucifixion.

Remember last week, we talked about the importance of sharing your testimony & witnessing. It spreads the word. So, many people heard that Jesus was going to Jerusalem and went to meet him there. Others had seen what he had done and they too were excited.

When he was coming in, They waived palms in the air to welcome him.

Palms
Signify goodness & victory
Solomon – had them on the wall
Revelations – people from every nation raised them in victory

Have you seen in cartoons or movies when royalty comes in they roll out the red carpet? To draw all attention from the center of the entrance. They laid cloaks & Palm branches on road in the same manner.

Come in, come here – Hosanna

Stop right there!

Isaiah 49:16 says that God loves you so much that he has your name written (engraved) on the palm of his hand.

Later he took a nail in that same spot for you.

Palm Tree stamp – I will meet you in the atrium and place a palm tree stamp on your hands.

Every time you look at that today, I want you to stop and remember 5 things.

Invite him in that moment. Where ever you are, whatever your thinking, whoever your with. (Give some examples)
Written – He’s got a little something on his hand for you too because he loves you.
Forgiven – It was by that mark you were forgiven.
Go ahead - Claim it – Victory – even if you’re not that close.
Praise

The Ice Road Trucker Story

Ethan and I were watching Ice Road Truckers the other night. [If you’re not familiar with the show, it’s based on Truck Drivers that drive 18 Wheelers in extreme conditions -even across frozen lakes and rivers- to deliver shipments.] Usually one segment will show you several different drivers and their routes and then switch back and forth between them.

In this episode one of the first drivers that we see, is getting ready to cross a frozen river and the swirling snow was blinding his view. He straightens his posture and leans in to the wheel. Immediately I recognize the stance. I’m sure that you have found yourself driving in a storm and it became so hard to navigate that you had to turn the radio off in order to see.

All of your muscles are assume position. You straighten up and lean forward, arms locked on the wheel. -Everything in your body becomes focused on seeing. You just can’t afford to take your eyes off the road.

Of course just as you recognize the intensity of the moment, the scene switches to a commercial or another driver. A while later the show switches back to the same driver and you can tell that some time as passed since we last saw him. There are now bags under his eyes. He says something to the effect of “No matter how many times I drive this route, I never get used to how serious it is. I am always on full alert because at any moment I can fall through the ice. The whole truck and I can be swallowed up.” I imagine how exhausted he must be after holding it together for hours in those conditions. Achy stiff muscles... dry eyes and mouth... everything in my body just being ready to let go and fall out.

Just as I complete the thought, I am convicted! Anxiety…

For a little back ground:
There have been a lot of "new things" in my corner of the world in the last few months. I've even hit 3 personal milestones. I started my first bible study in my home. I accepted a promotion at work. My mother even went on a trip with me, my husband and all 3 kids. We even rode in the same car. While those things might not sound like much, they are each very personal to me and hold a significant value.

On top of that I went away for the first time alone on a training event, leaving Colin and the kids for 7 days. We also have some sick family members and more things breaking and you know how life is…. Just as you get used to one set of conditions, everything rearranges and the familiar has completely changed again.

Anyway, over the last few weeks I too, have been exhausted. I have tried sleeping more. Going to bed earlier and sleeping in later. Taking vitamins, praying and doing anything else that might bring rest but I am just not finding restoration.

I think of the verse Proverbs 16:9. It says that the man plans his way but the Lord directs his steps. Sometimes that verse sounds so strange to me. How can we both be planning the same thing? It's a verse that I think about often. However, it can't be more timely than now. I often go into work having to pick the things that I will work on; knowing that there are so many others that I just won't get to. Even as I make the list and work through it, new things appear that are all trying to compete and get my attention.

I realize that although it comes in various forms, it has been anxiety that has snuck in. Many years ago, I used to suffer from anxiety attacks. I would find myself suddenly panic stricken and hyperventilating for no obvious reason. I didn’t recognize this instance because it didn't come with its old familiar outward indications. This recent occurrence has just been an internal ball of intensity that just kept me from resting or being comfortable. It has kept me from taking my eyes of the road.

Now Switching Gears
Have you ever had something (good or bad) that you've been asked to share? You try to comply but you just want to save a little for yourself. I can't help but think that anxiety is the same way. You can give God everything else in your life or on your list but there is one little something that you just want to hold (or end up holding) onto for a while; just in case... Maybe it is fear, what ifs, reputation, self-pity, your excuses or even something that you’re supposed to be doing that you still haven't managed to get to. I'm not saying that it's intentional. -Maybe you're just trying to hang on to the wheel.

Whatever it is, when the ice starts cracking, we wind up holding on tighter to what we've got in our hands so that we don't lose it, instead of reaching out to God.

In this episode, I suddenly realize exactly what has been happening. While I realize that I've been trying to get just through the last two months, I was also trying to tread so lightly [follow so many rules] because at any moment, I felt as though I too could fall through the cracks and be swallowed up myself. I am not tired from working too hard or simply doing too much. I'm worn out from trying to keep my own eyes on all of the balls at one time.

But doesn't his word say to cast ALL of your cares on him. -Not just two or three? What about the care of holding all of those other little ones together?

While I am really doing the same thing that I do every day, the new conditions prevent me from being comfortable. Maybe it keeps me from being cocky. Haha. I am trying to adopt the new requests and the new change of pace with a positive attitude but truthfully in the days before my trip, I feel like a toddler resisting one of my biggest breakdowns. It is all that I can do to hold it together. And NOTHING is wrong. I am frustrated because I can’t seem to reflect the JOY that I know is in me. I am not even sure that I can clearly explain or even pinpoint what is happening.

Days later
I have returned from that first trip away from my family, only to be on another, this time with them. It is exactly what I need. I sit outside in the river collecting rocks with Colin & the kids. I realize that my craving for outside, really is a reminder from God to let go. There is something about being in nature away from technology and corporate world and the demands of life that just cleanses everything and washes it away. While sitting alone in a hotel did offer its own gift of quiet; it just didn't cleanse me.

I get up and read another chapter in a bible study and I come across the Parable of the bags of Gold. I think about responsibility and really- I don’t want to be responsible for making decisions. I don’t want to be the one in charge. But man- Matthew 25:21 really sums it up and puts it in perspective. “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things! And then he says Come and share your master’s happiness.”  Responsibility is a blessing! What an honor it is for people to claim you. To trust you. To hold you accountable and to believe that you are able and or worthy!

And then I get the answer to my question: How can we both be planning the same thing?

You and I might sit down and make that list of tasks. We might even know the direction that we are headed. When the conditions change, it may not change what our priorities are; just our routes to get there and then some tasks might need to shuffle to in order to compensate for the new course. Responsibility is truly work, I know. But there is an honor and a trust and a respect with each of those tasks that is also given, if we just follow the prompting. –Not what we see but what we hear.

Sometimes life swirls at you. Sometimes we "deliver goods" in intense circumstances. Having his word in your heart will guide you when the things swirling around you makes it too hard to see. Almost like the man on the CB; you need to be tuned in to the voice within.

What is it that you and I are turning down when life picks up the pace; the number of tasks or the volume of the Director?

Fast forward a little:
This post is actually several months old now. I got such conviction on that trip with my husband and kids. But in learning the new conditions; trying to also monitor anxiety has been something that I have continued to struggle with. In fact even in a recent conversation with a Supervisor, he commented that he could see that I was still trying to just "pull through a little bit more" and "a little bit more". (Indicating that I am still struggling with stopping when I need to.)

Why is it so easy for us to see how a truck driver might need to pull over for rest or to check in on a CB. Yet, when it comes to emotions and spirituality, we just tend to keep going, and going and going. Maybe it's because our immediate situation doesn't seem like it has as severe consequences as falling through ice. But really, in those critical areas of our life, if we aren't successful by God's standards or in the right areas, then things can have detrimental consequences or fates...

I have come across so many verses lately that indicate our trials and sufferings are opportunities for God to reveal his Glory. If ultimately that is our mission [to reveal his Glory] shouldn't our biggest goal be to stay connected to the Glory while he's in the middle of making it?

As far as anxiety - I've discovered that I simply need boundaries. When I allow myself or life to cross over, I notice that my anxiety increases. It's difficult to keep boundaries in check and to not adjust them for selfish reasons but I hope that tidbit helps you as much as it helps me. When I get anxious, I realize that I need to check in and see what's out of line. I might even post a little something about boundaries soon...

Until then, blessings to you friend. I pray big prayers for each of us on our journeys.

But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. – Psalm 3:3

Tuesday Challenge #8 | Bible

Challenge: If you do not have a Bible that YOU love, your challenge this week is to FINALLY go and get one.

Maybe you are still using the first one that you were given and it's hard to understand. Maybe you don't remember where it came from. Maybe you sit with a list of things you'd like to have in your next one. Thumb index, Commentary, Biographies, Red Letters for the Words of God, Chronological Order, Leather Cover, Another Translation, Large Print, etc...

Go and get it. The more you like it, the more you will be inclined to read it!

Here's my pick (ISBN: 0310434807). The Life Application already includes great commentary, biographies and maps. The simple version with out "bells and whistles" is around $40.00. However, I prefer these extra features: Thumb Indexed, Large Print, Red Letters. Usually the cost is around $89.00 for all of that but it looks like it's on sale for $49.00 right now at this site. Note: The Large print will make your book heavier! But I wanted mine to last a looooong time!

It's easy to spend money on things that fade or get used up. Why not spend money on something that is eternal and will feed you for years to come?

Tips: If you're not sure what you're looking for and you want to compare them; You can peel the plastic on every book in Lifeway. So, plan on spending some time in there! They also have great coupons!

Here's a guide to the different translations in case you'd like to look at that piece before you even get there!

Scripture: Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. - Psalm 119:105

Witness & Testimony | Children's Church

Hi there! This was my first Children's Church Lesson. It happened to be the Sunday before Palm Sunday. I'm only posting them to see how things turn out but also in case someone else wanted to use them for anything. Feel Free!

Bare with my outlines. I've been practicing my notes different ways.

_____

Greetings (My name is Reggie) How are you this morning?

We’ve been reading John with SPECIAL friends. (Some friends from the church, including the pastor and person that usually does Children’s Church are away on a mission trip and we’ve been doing a Bible Study on the book of John.)

     a. Coming up on Palm & Easter Sunday now (So are the chapters we’re reading.)

Do you know what happened before Palm Sunday in all of those chapters?

     a. Jesus was with people performing miracles.

Here are some of them:
     a. He helped the Samaritan woman C4
     b. He Healed a lame man C5
     c. He fed thousands with just a few loafs of bread C6
     d. He healed a blind man and gave him sight.C9
     e.  He raised Lazarus from the dead. C11

Tell  - Every miracle that Jesus performed, people got excited. Some got upset but usually the people that saw or felt Jesus do something couldn’t wait to go tell someone about what was done and  how they met. Talking about what God is doing in our lives is called 2 different things.

aWitnessing – Like our friends in Cuba.
     b. Sharing our Testimony

Witnessing and sharing our testimony are very important things because it helps others learn about God if they didn’t already know him.

     a. Philemon – Says that sharing your testimony helps to make your faith complete.
bRevelations – Says that sharing your testimony helps defeat the devil.

Challenge – I challenge you this week to look for someone that you can share your experiences with.

Prayer - Dear Father, Thank you for being so close and personal with each of us. Help us be excited about spending time with you. Give us each a testimony & the courage to witness to others. Make our joy complete and let it be contagious to others. Bless & protect each of us on our way.

Tuesday Challenge #7 | Confession

This week's challenge: Last night at a prayer class a lady told me about an assignment that her sister did. She sat before God without a list to pray over or a list of things to ask for. She just tried to draw strength in his quietness and presence. If anything came to mind that needed to be confessed [new or old], she verbally confessed it. Then thanked God for taking it from her. Then returned to her quiet focus.

This morning, I went for walk for a little over an hour; listening to nature and passing cars and the sound of quiet. I completed the same assignment. The only other words I spoke were at the end. I asked God to fill [with his spirit and strength] each of those places that he had taken something from. To heal up those places so that nothing could come back in. To seal it up in his armor and his kiss.

I challenge you to find an hour outside this week and do the same. Then Check out the following scripture and pray it over yourself at the end! Thank him for his reconciliation of you.

Scripture for the week - The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.  For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. - Colossians 1:15-20

The King Is Coming

I walk the dirt lane
between my house and the water.
Like an aisle that leads me slowly
to my love

My heart touches each tree

like the fingers of a girl
down the backs of pews
as I make my way to the altar

Each row standing full and tall,

with the wisdom of my elders
They know not only when to rise
but to remain standing, so still

Their King is coming.

    T

I offer thanks, anticipation

the wind replies
Like a whisper on my cheek
with promise and of nearness

A gray, slick shadow emerges

one that usually lifts it's hands in waves.
as if to reach the heavens
from the belly of the ground

Now instead consoled by a season,

smoothing the usual clutter
Deeper pools still swirl beneath
as instinct compels it to keep ebbing closer

There is another River...

The King is coming.

    T

There's a lowliness to its lapping, like

the shush only a mother knows for her child
and a recognition of being held
by thy maker

And the merriment of birds
heard overhead
as they are sent to sing and scatter
they've got some news to tell

The falling snow; a quiet grace
As each flake is accepted or pushed aside
But anything willing to hold it
claims a shade of white;

Cover me

My King is coming.

    T

a blanket [of white] outstretches before me

a holiness that begs for complete surrender
the only act of worship I can muster, seems more of a gift
to sit, in awe and wonder

and then there is the Sun.

A resurrection that is new every morning.
Even when not in plain view
it is impossible to deny its existence

and the chime of a church beckons up stream

Man's best attempt to capture what God can do with words
God's creation summons a reminder
mans bell simply repeats it

Behold

Our King is coming

    T

Tuesday Challenge #6 | Prayer

This week's challenge - Today during your commute, pray the whole way back home to God. Out loud. No phone calls, no radio, no pod casts. Repeat it each day if necessary. Use scripture. Even if it's only the same one that keeps coming to mind. Pray about all the requests you've been given to pray for. Pray about your job, your family, yourself. Go ahead and tell him all those things that you don't want to say out loud. After all it's just you and God in the car and he already knows what's on your heart!

Scripture for the weekYou have searched me, Lordand you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. Psalm 139:2-4

Tuesday Challenge #5 | Giving

This week's challenge - Giving can be really easy in some ways and totally hard in others. It doesn't all have to be monetarily either. This week see how you can give beyond your comfort zone. Here are just a few ideas below to get you "brewing".

1. When you hear someone say that they wish they had something, see if there is a way that you can meet that need for them. Either by purchasing it yourself or giving something that you already have.

2. If you have an inner hoarder and you can't bear to separate with things even if you're not using them; maybe this week challenge is to finally go through the house or the garage or the storage units and get rid of stuff that is weighing you down! When you have the collection together, call your church to see if they know someone that can use it. If you've been stock piling for a yard sale, ask God if there is someone that you could be a blessing to instead and simply give it all to them.

3. Maybe when you're cooking dinner this week and someone stops by, invite them to stay with you. No matter how little you have. Or better yet, look for someone to invite to dinner. You don't have to make a crazy meal.

4. If you've had a nudging thought that keeps coming back about giving something to someone, this is the week to do it! It doesn't matter how big or small.

5. Ask God to reveal another way that he might want you to separate with money or things.

If you like bonus points, see if there is a way that you can give a word about God in the giving.

Scripture for the week - Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. -2 Corinthians 9:7

Prayer - Father God you see our current situation and the needs of others in our midst. Open up our spiritual eyes and ears to see who it is that we might need to serve in light of you. Help us to decide in our heart to give before we hear the cost. Help us break our attachment to things; increasing our desire to give without measure. Help us want to be a blessing instead of only waiting to receive one. Thank you for all that you have given to us!
